6LoWPAN (IPv6 over Low-Power Wireless Personal Area Networks) refers to a communication protocol for transmission of IPv6 packets over energy-saving wireless networks. As a basis for radio communication here thestandard IEEE 802.15.4 (PHY and MAC) is served like it is also used at ZigBee and WirelessHART. Radio links can be realized in the frequency bands 868 and 915 MHz as well as 2.4 GHz. 6LoWPAN is specified by a working group of the IETF. There appropriate proposals have been created, for example, for the compression of IPv6 header (RFC6282). Together with appropriate routing procedures - which are also specified in the IETF - this technology permits the construction of meshed networks consisting of small, wirelessly communicating, low-power devices.Using appropriate gateways they can be integrated into the global IP network - a big step towards the "Internet of Things".
